Modified Occupational Completion Points in Career Tech Schools

Modified Occupational Completion Points need to be promoted and established in a way that gets public vocational and technical schools paid, and more importantly, not penalized. MOCPs are not allowed in many districts, which leads to exclusion of students with disabilities who may not be perceived as successful "completers" of vocational programs. MOCPs are left to individual districts (at least in our state) to determine... View full idea »

Incentive Ideas

While we shouldn't have to pat our district personnel on the head and say "Good dog!" when they provide our children the APPROPRIATE part of FAPE, it might be nice to give them incentive to do the right thing. Whether this incentive is positive or negative depends on them. But more and more districts are resisting providing the appropriate services, especially to children of the poor and/or uneducated. There are too... View full idea »

in summary

There are some wonderful ideas and excellent feedback from this forum. I would love to hear feedback from the agency partners that are behind this event as to how they plan to implement these ideas and put them into practice! What can we as consumers in need of these changes and support do to encourage these much needed policy changes.

Using ELOs (extended learning opportunities) to help!

I'm very interested in knowing what school districts around the nation are doing with ELOs as a method of extending classroom learning into the community and assuring students gain real-world experiences WHILE fulfilling competencies needed for a rigorous secondary education.

Communities of practice: Context to facilitate collaboration

In the business world, there is evidence communities of practice provide a context for collaboration. In recent studies in secondary transition and through the investment in the IDEA Partnership, communities act as vehicles to improve transition practices. How might the federal government expand efforts to implement communities of practice as a strategy to improve transition practices?

Training for state entities

State departments of education, VR, Health (including early intervention and family, EHDI initiatives), Corrections, should mandate one two-day training each year for their staff to learn more about transition with children with low-incidence disabilities (visually impaired, deaf/hard of hearing, deafblind, traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities etc). One avenue for this is to contract with each state's Deafblind... View full idea »

Enforce current laws and require IDEA be provided by States

First, IDEA should be enforced by requiring the individual states to provide the services enumerated in the Act, not requiring that the parents do service provision and then sue for reimbursement, as currently is the controlling Decision of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Second, require that the states actually provide the services to ALL the disabled, in accordance with current laws. Currently, it appears that... View full idea »

Non-recorded skills - include in transition planning

Thinking outside the box -- how do we ensure students develop the endurance and stamina they need to perform tasks? Often, they get a job, but because they don't have endurance training (BOTH physical and mental), after a time they fail to function as they should. This is not something that happens just during the "transition" years -- but from the start. We need to look at Physical Education and related areas of the... View full idea »

Soft skills

Targeting soft skills teaching only at HS level is counter-productive. Shouldn't these be targeted right from the start -- pre-school and elementary?? There are different "levels" of soft skills and a student's needs may change -- as will interests and preferences. So modify the soft skills through all levels.

Teaching service intergration&how it effects family health&child

So as an Family Advocate I often ask family questions that are more than just about school, or Medicaid or FSSA(Food stamp, hoosierhealthwise Medicaid, TANF, Medicaid Disability and Medicaid waivers, etc.) or even SSI or SSDI, because as I am talking or listen: I am watching and seeing where the family is really hurting. I do find that IEP are not the most important when they have lost there food stamps and food banks... View full idea »
