Employer Recognition and Consumer Referral System

An idea for a capitalism based solution: -87% of consumers would prefer to give their business to companies that hire individuals with disabilities. -The disabilities market represents $250 billion in discretionary spending. Create a national recognition program for businesses who employ individuals with disabilities. Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce has something similar already in place: http://www.slchamber.com/page/sandbox/view/ubet... View full idea »

On-campus employment for those needing extra support?

In working with youth with emotional and mental health issues, we often have youth who are willing and able to work but need more support than can safely be provided on a work site or local business. We have work here at the non-profit they can do but often lack the funding to pay for their work, worker's comp., etc. Any thoughts of funding sources besides hitting up our donors for another program?

A new way of Hiring Practices.

For most people with Autism Spectrum Disorder is the Human Resources need to have them maintain some level of social skills. Human Resources rely on three things that make a person recommended for a job. One is the incessant and irrelevant need for Bachelors for an entry level position get rid of it. 2. Is that the Eye contact or social skills should not the only criteria to bar a person from a job. 3. HR needs... View full idea »

Transition from High School to work or college

Suggestion: Connectin seems to be the key to success. Autistic people have trouble making a connection with others as well as how things work in their field of business. I suggest that someone be assigned to the special needs person to assist them with their mistakes and provide security and companionship while they work toward independence. This person needs knowledge of athe special needs as well as the special needs... View full idea »

Integrated Resource Teams (IRT)

One of the key strategies of the Disability Employment Initiative (DEI), and before that, the Disability Program Navigator program, is the Integrated Resource Team (IRT). This is part of the one-stop concept where a customer comes into the workforce center and that workforce center brings subject matter experts into the process as opposed to customer being sent all over to find what they need. The IRT starts with the... View full idea »

Make adult services transferable between states

Currently, if a person who continues to need employment support is funded for that support in one state, parents are unable to leave that state without losing that support. A move can mean going to the end of a very long waiting list. IEPs transfer from state to state. Adult services should, also.

Schedule A hiring Authority

There is a hiring authority out there called Schedule A. It is to assist qualified Individuals with Targeted Disabilities to get hired. However, if you look at an Agencies EEOC report called the MD-715, you will find that Agencies are not using the hiring authority to attract, hire and promote IWTD. They will have the individual fill out a G-259 after they have been selected to self-certify that they are an IWTD but... View full idea »

State/Federal job opportunities

In order to better serve the employment needs for adults with special needs, state and federal agencies should be required to hire as many as possible. After all, if they are partially providing funding, it makes good sense that they should be one of the primary employers to this population. There are so many job opportunities available: could landscape premises, filing, cleaning, mail, and so much more.

National Disability Employment Policy

We would benefit from the formulation of a national disability employment policy for all agencies serving individuals with disabilities to follow. The policy would involve education and social security partners as well as Medicaid and Medicare services to name a few. A national policy could remove silos and promote blended funding to maximize use of federal dollars.

There is a strong evidence base that students with disabilities who leave school as self-determined young people achieve more positive employment and independent living outcomes. Asset-based Career Assessment and Coaching

There is too much focus in the disability employment field on deficits and challenges and not enough on assets and opportunities.
