Accountability for transition services

I have read all the ideas posted to date and there are some really good ones and some not so good ones. But they all have one fatal flaw. A hotline for employers employing people with disabilities

Employers would benefit incredibly from the existence of a telephone hotline helping them learn everything about the process of hiring people with disabilities, to answer any questions they might have, help them communicate with all the right people, and plan any meetings with the right people. Many employers and HR Departments do not know how to help people with disabilities transition into employment. This would ...View full idea »

Modify SSA - Ticket to Work rules for youth in transition

Adjust regulations for youth served under Ticket to Work including the following: -- The Individual Work Plan should be modified to reflect the slower progression of youth in transition. The IWP now requires that the primary goal be employment at or exceeding SGA. That is the long term goal for every beneficiary, but for youth in transition the first goal should be employment regardless of earnings level. -- The definition ...View full idea »

Disabled youth and their families do not have a good thorough understanding of how Transition works and the impact on their lives once they leave the Educational Entitlement systems and move into the Non-Entitlement Adult service programs. There needs to ...View full idea »

Increase funding for CAP programs

Vocational rehab is a nightmare to deal with and dangerous to boot. There needs to be dedicated legal staff in the Client Assistance Program in our state to target system transition issues in the VR system.

Required Disability Awareness Training

This could be required for any business that gets any sort of tax exemption, tax credit, or federal/state training money. It would involve disability awareness training, how to integrate people with disabilities into their business, how to contact OVR or someone similar to address a potential issue (like saying a job coach is needed for a while instead of firing them), and how to avoid "silent" discrimination against ...View full idea »

Changes to IDEA to strengthen transition reuqirements

As attorneys and advocates for children with disabilities, we often have issues with trying to enforce what to us seems to be pretty clear mandates in the IDEA regulations to provide age appropriate transition assessments and programming for transition age students with disabilities. As with the entire IEP, the legislative requirements are minimized by decisions by the Department of Education, hearing officers and ...View full idea »
