Collaborate for Youth! There are Dead Malls across the country. In our small state, right in the center, perfectly accessible is a giant Dead Mall. Currently a few large chains stores have attached themselves to the outside but do not provide access into empty the mall. I've heard some investor has bought it and plans on bringing in more retail chains. INSTEAD, these massive retail corporations should vacate the mall ...View full idea »

Remove the Government Doughnut Hole

It seems that the government encourages and subsidizes helplessness and unemployment for disabled folks by removing all assistance if the individual enjoys any career success. The government would send me SSI benefits and a Medicaid card tomorrow if I only asked because I have muscular dystrophy. If, however, I want to use my graduate degree to work as much as possible (and I do), everything becomes trickier. That's why ...View full idea »

Transition and self-advocacy

When I graduated high school and attended my intake meeting with the university's Disability Resource Center, I knew very little about my rights and my need to start advocating for myself. Many students leaving high school and moving towards higher education do not have the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate. There is a lot of knowledge that goes into this. Students need to have a strong understanding of their ...View full idea »

Train Caregivers and PA's about Assistive Tech Apps

Software abandonment is a huge issue because caregivers are not trained to use the apps/software. Assistive technology can become the prompter and reminder for so many life functions, but if the caregivers don't understand how to work with them, then technology abandonment is inevitable. In Oregon, I see a high turnover of caregivers. I also see that they're on the bottom of the payscale with few incentives to better ...View full idea »
